In 1809, as commander of a company—holding the rank of captain in the mounted artillery of the Duchy of Warsaw, which he had raised at his own expense—he took part in the war against Austria. He distinguished himself in the battles for Zamość. He became a squadron commander in 1810. From 1811 onward, he served in the 6th Uhlan Regiment. In 1812, he joined the General Confederation of the Kingdom of Poland.
He fought in the Moscow Campaign of 1812 and the Saxon Campaign of 1813. Near Leipzig, he was taken prisoner by the Russians. After his release and return to Poland, he joined the Army of the Kingdom of Poland. In 1816, he resigned.
