Philippe Paul Count de Segur, as a brigadier general, took part in the Russian campaign of 1812 under Napoleon. The fall of Napoleon derailed his military career and from then on he devoted himself to memoir-historical literature. In his memoirs he describes the individual battles of the Russian campaign and the alleged causes of Napoleon's overall defeat.
"Memoirs" was published in 1824. Within three years they reached ten print runs, securing the author a place in the French Academy.
