Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (1758-1841) - famous poet, playwright and novelist, teacher at the Knights' School in Warsaw, co-author of the draft of the May 3 Constitution, secretary to Tadeusz Kosciuszko during the Kosciuszko Insurrection, secretary of the Senate in the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland, was a member of the National Education Directorate of the Duchy of Warsaw, and from 1815. Department of National Enlightenment of the Kingdom of Poland, offices established to supervise educational activities. By virtue of his position, from 1811 to 1828 he visited schools throughout the country. Going from town to town, he visited villages and stage towns and closely observed their inhabitants. He described the account of his travels in the form of a diary, which he titled Historical Travels in the Polish Lands between 1811 and 1828 made. It was published in book form decades later, only in 1858, in Paris; St. Petersburg, by A. Franck, B. M. Wolff and in 1859 a version enriched with woodcuts. J.U. Niemcewicz began his first trip in 1811 by visiting Krakow, Sandomierz and Lublin. The following year he traveled to Royal Prussia. In 1816 he toured Volhynia. In 1817, he traveled to Gdansk and Königsberg. The following year, through Podolia and Ukraine, he reached as far as the Black Sea. In 1819 he traveled in Lithuania and the following year in Galicia.
