John Stuart Mill (born May 20, 1806 in Pentonville, died May 8, 1873 in Avignon) - English philosopher, political scientist and economist. In philosophy, he originally followed the tradition of utilitarianism. In political science and economics, he was a theorist and representative of liberalism. He is considered the founder of democratic liberalism. He was married to Harriet Taylor Mill, with whom they jointly wrote The Subjection of Women - one of the most important critiques of gender inequality.
His work Principles of political economy with some of their applications to social philosophy was placed in the index librorum prohibitorum by decree of 1856.

1st edition in Polish.

"Referring to the tradition of English empiricism, Mill developed the main methodological version of it. The correctness of the empiricist view of human knowledge he tried to demonstrate in the field of logic in the broadest sense, to which he gave a new interpretation, linking the position of empiricism with nominalism. In Mill's view, the logic of the pre-mathematical periodfound its most mature shape. Mill's most significant achievement was his methodology and theory of eliminative induction, which he regarded as the basis of all cognitively complete knowledge. Developing this theory, he codified the principles of eliminative induction (later called Mill's canons). Influenced by A. Comte, he formulated the English version of positivism and developed the positivist theory of science. Considering from this point of view the concepts of causality, substance (matter), self (soul), he took the position of phenomenalism. In psychology, taking the position of associationism, Mill tried to explain the course of mental life by the laws of association. "PWN Encyclopedia
