One of the most famous novels of the 18th century, referring to rogue romances, a genre called picaro. In The Cases of Idi Blas, Lesage depicts the fate of a young, intelligent and shrewd plebeian from the small town of Santillana, who sets off for Salamanca to get an education, work, and, with the help of wealthy patrons, make a career there. His journey is full of adventures: he falls into the hands of highwaymen, becomes the servant of an impostor doctor, then of a bishop, secretary to the Duke of Lerma, and climbs the steps of his career, gaining influence and fortune, until he finds that the wheel of Fortune turns fast.... The novel sparkles with wit, it is full of funny, anecdotes, stories and tales of Idi's love affairs, which matures before our eyes. Together with the main character we learn about different environments, court relations, truths about happiness, love and fate, learning what is most important in life.
