KAUKAZ, or the last days of the Shamil
Historical novel
Warsaw, 1904 pp. 201, format 14x20.5 cm
"The Caucasus, or the Last Days of Shamil" fictionalizes the story of Shamil, the infamous and legendary leader of the uprising of the Caucasian highlanders against Russia in 1834-1859. Shamil headed a state called the Caucasus Imamate and for several decades defended the territories of Chechnya and Dagestan from occupation by Russia. After the balance of power changed, Shamil was forced to start peace negotiations, in which Shamil's son became a hostage. These events form the canvass of Gordon's novel. The broadly sketched background depicts the original rich culture of the Caucasus.
