"Asylum" - undoubtedly one of Faulkner's most outstanding works - is part of a (...) saga set in the imaginary land of Yoknapatawpha showing the decline and degeneration of the old patriarchal traditions of the South.
The book, drastic in content, is as cruel as it is profound in meaning and masterful in form. It shows a community in a state of moral degeneration; a people trying to keep up with the rapid development of civilization, but falling into spiritual collapse. It is a world in which the rapist and his victim are equally contemptible.
